Reading the ProPublica article in its entirety (it is quite long) dispels some confusion. That the girls were arrested for NOT doing something was disconcerting. Laws against inaction (nonfeasance) are extraordinarily rare. According to Pro-Publica, the petition for the arrests cited encouraging the fight as the transgression. I’m not excusing the stupidity of what went down but rather I am pointing to a nuance that changes crass stupidity to a legal, racial insidiousness (i.e., institutional racism) that seems to have taken over an entire county of Rutherford, TN. This is worse than stupidity. It’s an entire legal system cleverly crafted to allow for charges of convenience so popular in totalitarian states.
